Vss?

Just picked up my truck, got the new meats on. Awesome! The mechanic told me that my U joints were fine, that he thought the VSS might be causing the thunk I've been hearing? Any input on this?
 
As a follow up...is the VSS on a 95 351w still on the tranny?
