1994 f350 5.8 gas motor problem

I have a 94 f350 with a 5.8l gas engine. It starts but it makes explosions. When I put it in gear, it gets real weak and dies. It is also getting hot. I have put new plugs and wires are good. I think timing is good. Any ideas on what could be problem?
